How to Replace & Install A New Boiler in Scotland, UK?

Many of you wonder how long it takes to replace and install a new boiler system in your home. It’s normal to know because there will undoubtedly be a few changes to your home life, including your central heating and hot water supply.

There is no simple answer to this issue. Here’s what you need to consider:

  • Whether you already have a boiler installed
  • What type of fuel does your current boiler use
  • If you plan on relocating your boiler
  • The type of boiler you’re considering installing
  • If you are changing the type of boiler, if so, what type you are changing from and to
  • Any complexities related to your home’s layout, exiting water supply, etc.

However, a new boiler installation at Free Boiler Scheme will take between six hours and four days. In this blog, we’ll provide several examples below to help you better understand the process.

Installing A Boiler in Scotland: How Long?

  • A Simple Boiler Swap: 4-6 hours

As briefly stated, a boiler ‘ swap’ is usually always faster to install than a ‘conversion.’

  1. A swap’ occurs when a boiler of the same type (combi to combi, system to system) and similar power output is installed in your home. A combi change typically takes one day. A combi boiler has everything you need for hot water and warmth.
  2. A system swap may take longer. A system boiler must work with the hot water cylinder; a new cylinder may also be required. A system swap can take up to 1.5 days.

Our UK’s best engineer can accomplish this in less than a day.

  • Changing your boiler’s position takes 1-2 days

If you want to move your old boiler, relocating your new one may take an additional half-day. This, however, depends on the home’s style and size, as well as how far the new boiler is from the old system. Furthermore, minor repairs and changes to the installation location can take an entire day, depending on the circumstances. Our engineer must cover your gas pipes and run new piping to the new location. They may also need to alter sections of the pipework to guarantee that the radiators heat up.

Some minor structural work may also be required, such as creating boiler replacement timeframes and cutting holes through brick walls for the flue and overflow. If the old boiler replacement needs to be dismantled, relocated, or removed, this will also take the time required for a new boiler setup.

  • Installation of a completely new combi boiler: 1-2 days

If there is no boiler, installing it will take about the same time as relocating it because the quantity of work is identical. Any time saved by not removing the old model will be spent installing brand-new connections to your water and gas main inlets.

Essentially, without a boiler, there will be no central heating system. The job will take longer if you have a completely new central heating system and combi boiler installed. A completely new system typically takes one to two weeks to build because it involves lifting carpets, flooring, and floors, laying plumbing, and installing radiators. The good news is that this can be done while the boiler is installed.

  • Changing fuel type takes 2-3 days

If you install a new boiler in Dundee but change the fuel type, you will need to do additional plumbing and electrical work. For example, if you are switching from an oil or gas system to a new electric boiler while maintaining the same position, the installation process will take longer.

  • Changing boiler type takes 2-3 days

Because each type has its own gas, water, and electrical requirements, switching from one type to another requires installing a new one and removing the old one. Replacing a heater requires more effort and time than simply moving it.

The most significant difference will occur if you are moving from a combi to a heat only or system model.

  1. With a system boiler, you’ll need a cylinder to store water for your central heating system. This is commonly positioned in an airing cupboard or near the boiler and requires raising the floorboards and installing new plumbing. If you install immersion heaters in your cylinder, they must also be connected to the electrical mains.
  2. If upgrading to a heat-only boiler, you’ll also need a cold-water tank and an expansion tank, which should be built in the loft or at an elevated location on your property’s highest point. That’s because the system is powered by gravity rather than central pressure. This will also take longer because more plumbing needs to be installed.
  3. Suppose you upgrade from a system or heat-only boiler to a combi boiler. In that case, any extra time will be spent removing the unneeded cylinders and tanks, stripping away the extra pipes, and cleaning up afterward.
